5111.4 - ADMISSIONS TO TECHNICAL SCHOOL DISTRICT

Section: Students Date Created: July 2023 Date Edited: February 2025

5111.4 - ADMISSIONS TO TECHNICAL SCHOOL DISTRICT

The district offers technical training and academic courses for, high school, career/technical school, post-secondary and adult students, and students enrolled in the district's adult high school.  The admissions philosophy provides all interested applicants an opportunity to enroll in the program of their choice providing that they meet the minimum requirements of their enrollment area.

The district is an equal opportunity educational system.  The district does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, national origin, ancestry, age, marital status, familial status, pregnancy, pregnancy related disability, domestic partnership status, affectional or sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, genetic information, sex, disability or atypical hereditary cellular or blood trait of any individual, or because of liability for service in the armed forces of the United States, disability, nationality, national origin, place of residence in the district, social or economic condition, nonapplicable disability or because of genetic information or refusal to submit to or make available the results of a genetic test.  The district does not discriminate in the administration of employment, contract practices, educational policies, student enrollment and admission policies, scholarships, loans, grants, and other school administered programs.

The district shall not disclose information regarding an applicant's disability status to the admissions committee as part of the admissions process.  The admissions coordinator shall confidentially maintain all information regarding the student's disability status and shield it from the Admissions Committee until after the student has been given an offer of acceptance.  Such inquiry shall be restricted to information necessary for planning educational opportunities and accommodations for the student.

Enrollment is provided free of charge to high school and adult high school students.  Post-secondary and adult students are charged fees based on the current student enrollment fee policy.

Some CTE programs receive more applications than there are student seats; they are oversubscribed.  To provide for maximum access and equitable student programming, the district will use a lottery system to determine student entrance into oversubscribed CTE programs.

Cape May County Technical School shall admit nonresident students to the extent that space is available.

Admission deadlines established for the enrollment process will be adhered to in order to provide access to instruction at the earliest time in the school year.

Student Transfers/Advanced Standing

Students transferring from training programs offered by private or public educational institutions certified by the State Board of Education or the Office of Licensure and Credentials may request to transfer into the same training program offered by the district.  Acceptance will be determined  an individual basis when classroom space exists and academic performance is rated as satisfactory on the official transcript supplied by the previously attended institution.

Enrollment fees for adult/post-secondary transfer students will be pro-rated against the program cost to permit completion of the educational plan recommended by the instructor(s) and guidance counselor and approved by the Principal.

Admission information is provided to potential students through the guidance office and/or adult high school office.

Admission of High School Students

All students who are legal residents of Cape May County and have completed at least eighth grade in a program of studies shall be eligible to apply for admission to the Cape May County Technical High School.  Such students will be considered for admission upon submission of the required application materials and adherence to established school policy guidelines.

Admission of Students from Nonpublic Education Settings

The Board recognizes the constitutional and statutory rights of parents, guardians, and persons who have custody and control of children to choose alternatives to public education for their children.  This includes the right to instruct children at home and to send children to private schools.

When children from these nonpublic settings apply for admission to the district, the Board also recognizes its obligation to apply its admission requirements equitably.

Accordingly, the district may require such applicants to provide proof of successful completion of an eighth-grade curriculum in their specific nonpublic education setting.  In addition, the district may require testing to verify academic achievement, and may request additional records equivalent to those provided by public school applicants through the standard admissions process.

Admission to the district may be denied due to failure to provide the required academic and supporting records or to participate in the testing process to determine academic levels.  When admission is denied the student and/or the parent may appeal the decision to the Principal or his or her designee.  There shall be one appeal hearing and the decision of the Principal shall be final.
